OB-GYN resident impressed with CKMC « Back to News
Bret Heskett, M.D., visited Central Kansas Medical Center because he wanted to experience the day-to-day workings of an OB-GYN practice at a community hospital. He said it was everything he had hoped for.

Dr. Heskett is in his third year of a four-year residency in obstetrics and gynecology. His co-workers at CKMC included Maxine Lingurar, M.D., and Michella Switzer, D.O., at the hospital’s Women’s Health Center.

“I helped deliver babies, perform C-sections and other surgeries, and make patient rounds in the hospital,” Dr. Heskett said. “I did what any OB-GYN would do.”

Residency follows graduation from medical school, and the resident works with the oversight of a board-certified physician.

“I was impressed with the Women’s Health Center and its busy OB-GYN practice,” Dr. Heskett said. “CKMC as a whole is really a very up-to-date facility. With every new provider, they bring to the hospital new expertise and new technology. It is so impressive.”

Recent examples include the recruitment of Ranjan Sachdev, M.D., a Mayo Clinic-trained orthopedic surgeon, and Dr. Tatiana Kovtoun’s new treatment option for varicose veins. These are just two of many examples, Dr. Heskett said, that indicate CKMC is progressive and keeping up with community needs.

“I always wanted to practice in a smaller community hospital, not a large tertiary care center,” Dr. Heskett added. “This experience was just what I wanted. We did a lot during those two weeks at the Women’s Health Center. There were at least 10 babies born into the world and that makes for a busy practice.”

Dr. Heskett was born and raised at Tipton, in north central Kansas, and is currently based in Reading, Pa., for his residency. He earned his undergraduate degree at Kansas State University and graduated from the University of Kansas School of Medicine in 2007.

“I was glad to be back home in Kansas,” Dr. Heskett said. “I was impressed with how friendly and accommodating everyone was. It was like I remembered from having lived in Kansas my whole life.”
