CKMC surgeon brings new techniques to area « Back to News
Ranjan Sachdev, M.D., a board-certified Mayo Clinic-trained surgeon will open his office in mid-October at Central Kansas Medical Center to provide a full range of orthopedic services to central Kansas residents.

Ranjan Sachdev, M.D.

Dr. Sachdev said his practice will focus on both surgical and non-surgical treatments of not only fractures and sports injuries but also arthritis and osteoporosis.

“Our office will offer many orthopedic treatments and procedures, including those related to sports injuries,” Dr. Sachdev said. “The exceptions are problems pertaining to the back and neck that are better treated by physicians specializing in back and neck pain.”

Dr. Sachdev plans to bring newer technologies to the area such as computer-assisted navigation for hip and knee replacements. He will be the first surgeon in Kansas to use OrthoPilot Navigation for joint-replacement surgery.

“I use computer-navigated joint-replacement surgery techniques because they allow for more accurate soft-tissue balancing,” Dr. Sachdev said. “This results in less pain and easier therapy sessions after surgery for the patient.”

OrthoPilot has a proven track record in tens of thousands of cases and the evidence is outlined in more than 300 publications.

Dr. Sachdev said the system’s advantages include:
o Accurate alignment of the prosthesis;
o Precise and accurate implant sizing; and
o Well-balanced knee as it moves from bent to straight position

Dr. Sachdev will offer two evening clinics each week to accommodate his patients. On Mondays and Wednesdays, the clinics will be open until 8 p.m. at his first-floor CKMC office.

“We want to make patients’ visits more convenient for working people,” Dr. Sachdev said. “In many cases, they won’t have to take time off work.”

In addition, Dr. Sachdev’s office will be totally paperless since he will establish an electronic medical records system. This allows immediate access to all patient records any time.

The orthopedic surgeon noted he was attracted to CKMC for several reasons.

“First was the need for orthopedic services here and the hospital’s mission to take care of everyone, regardless of whether or not they have an insurance card,” Dr. Sachdev said. “Second was the friendliness of people - Midwest friendly. I remember this from being at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota and it was reinforced here.

“And next, everybody at CKMC is very close, like a family with a great sense of loyalty,” Dr. Sachdev added. “This attitude results in a team approach to healthcare.”

Sharon Lind, CKMC president and chief executive officer, said Dr. Sachdev will be a welcome addition to the hospital’s staff of physicians.

“We are extremely excited to have a physician of such renown here at CKMC,” Lind commented. “We are gratified that Dr. Sachdev has chosen to become part of our highly competent medical team. This is just one more example of CKMC’s commitment to provide central Kansans the services they need.”

The surgeon graduated from Maulana Azad Medical College in New Delhi, India, in 1973. He completed his surgical residency/surgical internship at S.U.N.Y Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse, N.Y., in 1977. Dr. Sachdev completed his first orthopedic residency in 1978 at Creighton University at Omaha, Ne., and another in 1981 at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. He also earned a master’s of business administration in 2000 at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa.

From 1997 to 2007, Dr. Sachdev worked at facilities in the metropolitan area of Bethlehem. These were Eastern Pennsylvania Osteoporosis Center, Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Center, St. Luke’s Hospital and LVH Muhlenberg Hospital Center. His most recent position was Director of Orthopedics at Wellmont Hawkins County Hospital in Rogersville, Tenn.

“After working in a large urban area for a while, I wanted to provide my services in an area of need,” Dr. Sachdev said. “I want to do the same thing in central Kansas that I was doing in Tennessee.”

Dr. Sachdev also is certified by the International Society of Clinical Densitometry, which pertains to osteoporosis and bone health.
