Anyone who is affected by cancer is invited to a free picnic where patients, survivors and families will have a chance to meet and socialize. The event is set for 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 5 at the Best Western Angus Inn Courtyard, 2920 10th, Great Bend.
Serena Sechser, left, discusses plans for the upcoming Cancer Support Group picnic with Kay and Bill Maneth. Sechser is a Central Kansas Medical Center chaplain; the Maneths are CKMC volunteers and active in the support group.
The Heartland Cancer Center Cancer Support Group is the sponsor; reservations for the chicken dinner should be made by Friday, May 1 by calling HCC, 620-792-5511. “This free event is for those whose lives are affected in any way by cancer,” said Serena Sechser, Central Kansas Medical Center chaplain. “We encourage patients to take this opportunity to talk with others who are or have been in their situation. “Survivors can share their hope and strength with others,” Sechser added. “We believe those who attend can find comfort and peace of mind in one another.” The Cancer Support Group, which is observing its first anniversary in May, usually meets at 2 p.m. on the first and third Tuesdays of the month at HCC, 204 Cleveland. “The picnic will be a great opportunity for people who have not been able to attend our day-time meetings,” Sechser noted. “They can come and enjoy the evening, while socializing with patients, survivors and families.” Sechser noted that HCC serves not only Great Bend residents but also many people from nearby communities. The picnic will afford them the chance to meet one another in a social setting. “The special people at the Heartland Cancer Center will welcome all newcomers and regulars to this event,” Sechser commented. “There is certainly no obligation to attend any other meetings. “However, all of us want to extend a welcoming hand to those who are interested,” she added. “They can come to one meeting, all meetings or something in between. Just so they know we are here if they need us.” HCC is part of the CKMC family. |
