Danna Krom’s background is allowing her to have a special rapport with the nurses and other healthcare providers she is recruiting to Central Kansas Medical Center and St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Larned.
Danna Krom, right, new Central Kansas Medical Center recruiter, congratulates Shamara Winchester, LPN. Krom recently recruited Winchester to CKMC.
Krom is the new recruiter/employee health associate at the hospitals who is seeking nurses, respiratory and physical therapists, and laboratory and radiology personnel. Her professional experience includes positions as an emergency medical technician, certified medication aide and certified nurse’s aide.
Krom also acquired a licensed-practical-nurse level of training before changing her major to social work.
“I have a genuine respect and fondness for people in the healthcare professions,“ Krom said. “It is so rewarding to help them with their careers and bring them to our communities.”
The new recruiter talks with candidates who have applied for CKMC or SJMH positions and travels to nursing schools and job fairs. In her first few weeks on the job she has visited prospective employees in Kansas City, Topeka and Wichita.
“I am introducing myself and our hospitals to those who are graduating or will graduate in a few years,” Krom said. “We want to develop professional and personal relationships with prospects and maintain contact with them. Maybe this will lead to internships with local doctors and full-time employment.
“When candidates come to town, I take them on a driving tour to familiarize them with the Great Bend and Larned area,” she added. “We want to give them a chance to learn about the smaller-town way of life and see all the things we have to offer.”
So far, Krom has successfully recruited four nurses and made offers to three others from out of state. When open positions need to be filled right away, the hospitals contract with agencies that provide temporary professional services.
In addition to her healthcare background, Krom was a social worker for Social & Rehabilitation Services in Great Bend for 10 years; a social worker at Larned State Hospital for 18 months; and director of staff development at LSH for two years.
As director of staff development, Krom coordinated and taught courses such as Head Trauma, Leadership and Nursing Documentation.
She earned her bachelor’s degree in social work at the University of Nebraska at Kearney in 1992; her healthcare positions were in Kearney. Krom also earned a master’s degree in 2006 in Human Resources Management from Kennedy Western University.
Krom has lived here for 13 years. She and her husband, Christopher, have four children – Kinser, 17, Alec, 12, Laura, 10, and Caven, 3.
In her new job, Krom works with Brad Holliday, executive director of Human Resources.
“We are thrilled to have Danna join our Human Resources team,” Holliday said. “Her experience allows her to connect with nursing and clinical candidates in a special way. Danna has hit the ground running and we are already seeing a big impact from her focus, enthusiasm and determination.”
