Spiritual Needs of All Persons
- Belonging: Who cares for me/about me? When you are most in need or most afraid, to whom do you turn?
- Purpose: When do I feel more alive? What gives your life meaning?
- Outlook: Can tomorrow be as good or better than today? What role does your faith play in regaining your health?
- Control: Do I feel free to shape my own destiny? Do you make choices each day that positively affect your life?
- Communication: With whom can I talk about my inner life? Are there people with whom you have trouble communicating?
- Values: By whose values do I live? Do you experience life as sacred?
- Forgiveness: Am I forgiven and forgiving? Do you often feel guilty for past shortcomings?
Chaplains respond to a person's spiritual needs by:
- Listening
- Being "with" a patient, family member, friend, staff member
- Assessing spiritual needs and issues
- Guiding through the grief process
- Making suggestions for spiritual growth.
- Providing materials for spiritual development.
- Leading support groups.
John Grummon is a chaplain at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital and is a member of the Golden Belt Home Health and Hospice care team. He also serves as an on-call chaplain for Central Kansas Medical Center and Heartland Cancer Center. John is an ordained minister of the American Baptist Churches USA.
Sister Elizabeth Amman, O.P., provides and coordinates spiritual/pastoral care at Central Kansas Medical Center. She also serves as an on-call chaplain for CKMC and Heartland Cancer Center. Sister Elizabeth is a member of the Grand Rapids Dominican Sisters in Michigan and is certified as a Spiritual Director.
