CKMC FOUNDATION’S GOLF CLASSIC RAISES OVER $76,000.00

Central Kansas Medical Center employees and volunteers display the check for $76,210.10 that was raised during the Second Annual CKMC Golf Classic. All proceeds are earmarked for the CKMC-owned Heartland Cancer Center Patient Care Fund. It was a class act the first time around and it was even classier this year. The Second Annual Central Kansas Medical Center Golf Classic raised $76,210 that will be deposited directly into the Heartland Cancer Center Patient Care Fund.

The first annual golf outing in 2005 raised $55,782 for the cancer center, which is owned by CKMC.

"We are simply overwhelmed," said Mark Mingenback, CKMC vice president of professional services. "This compassionate community obviously understands that we have such a strong need to help our neighbors who are patients of the Heartland Cancer Center.

"Cancer treatments often lead to financial stress and sometimes even bankruptcy," Mingenback noted. "This stress can cause additional heartache in families and our Patient Care Fund can alleviate some of this stress."

The fund provides financial assistance to cancer patients who have no insurance or have exhausted their policies' benefit limits. Those who apply may become eligible for help through CKMC's normal charity-care procedures.

The special fund-raising event began with an Oct. 1 auction, which accounted for $32,000 of the total. Big-ticket items included a 37-inch hi-definition TV, Aruba vacations and a 5-month-old yellow Labrador Retriever.

The next day, 144 golfers hit the links at the Club at StoneRidge. Championship Flight winners were Rick Ball, Mitch Haney, Mike Schettler, and Craig Smith, with a 57. First Flight winners were Derry Dougan, Brian Haynes, Darrin Dohrman and Clinton Vratil, with a 62. And Second Flight winners were Terry Brown, John Cross, Patti Pfannenstiel and Bill Hoeffner, with a 68.

"Our heartfelt gratitude goes to all the golfers and auction bidders who helped us raise this money for the Heartland Cancer Center," said Jettie Zoller, CKMC manager of marketing and public relations. "And none of this would have been possible without the numerous business and individual sponsorships.

"Much credit also goes to the wonderful team of volunteers," Zoller added. "They came from all over the community, asking 'what can I do to help?'"

In addition to the proceeds from the golf-auction event, memorials and private donations support the Heartland Cancer Center.

"We understand that generous central Kansans want to make a local difference but sometimes aren't sure how to go about it," Mingenback noted. "A donation to the Heartland Cancer Center is a great avenue to making a real difference to friends and neighbors right here in our own communities."

The Third Annual CKMC Golf Classic is set for Sept. 30 and Oct. 1, 2007.
