Children's Miracle Network
The CKMC Foundation, Inc. is one of only four Trustees in the state of Kansas for Children's Miracle Network. As such, it is responsible for distributing funds to applicant families in a 9 county area, including Barton, Pawnee, Stafford, Rush, Pratt, Rice, Ellsworth, Lincoln and Mitchell counties. Funding is given for medical equipment, medication, travel and supplies. Independent of its stewardship duties, the Foundation has also earned a significant grant from CMN for pediatric equipment and services, including funding for a Bereavement Camp for children. Families and physicians of pediatric patients are encouraged to apply by downloading this form ( Microsoft Word Format or Adobe PDF Format) or contact the CMN Coordinator at the Foundation, Stacy Hefley or phone 620-786-6284 for further information.

CKMC Helps Babies Breathe
There are a number of reasons why newborn babies may need a little help breathing on their own. But whatever the reason, Central Kansas Medical Center now has new equipment to help infants take those first breaths of life.
CKMC recently acquired two Neopuffs for the nursery.
“This neo-natal resuscitation system is an alternative to the traditional bag-valve-mask procedure,” said Katie Crump, obstetrics head nurse. “It is much safer and we can regulate the pressure so we don’t over-inflate the lungs, while ensuring there is enough pressure to keep them open to breathe freely.”
A Neopuff is needed in a small percentage of babies born by C-section or those who have endured difficult deliveries, Crump added. More frequently, it is needed with pre-term infants.
“The use of a Neopuff can also result in a shorter hospital stay for the newborn,” Crump added. “And it is much more comfortable for the caregiver, who needs only one hand to operate the equipment.”
Everyone in the nursery appreciates the efforts of Eagle Radio and the Children’s Miracle Network (CMN), which provided the new equipment, Crump noted. “We are so grateful for these new, innovative pieces of equipment,” she commented.
Eagle Radio’s March 26-27 radiothon was its third to raise money that goes directly to CMN, Operations Manager Andie Price said. CKMC then applied to CMN for the Neopuff grant.
“We have been blessed with listeners who reach into their pockets for a cause we believe in,” Price said. “There is no better feeling than knowing you can make a difference in the life of a child. The fact that 100 percent of the money raised goes to benefit kids makes it an easy choice for charitable giving.”
Stacy Hefley is the local CMN coordinator; she is also the marketing and merchandizing manager at CKMC.
“I strongly encourage families to contact me for financial assistance when a child is sick,” Hefley said. “We can apply for funds to help defray some expenses associated with the illness.”
CMN helps children ages birth to 21 with items such as medical equipment, prescriptions, travel expenses, wigs after hair loss due to a medical procedure, nutritional supplements and patient-education materials.
However, the organization does not pay for items such as doctor and hospital bills, rent, eyeglasses, dental work, or over-the-counter medicines and supplies.
“Help with prescriptions, travel, diapers, pull-ups and wipes are common requests,” Hefley noted. “We are happy to work with families throughout central Kansas.”
Hefley’s territory includes Barton, Rush, Pawnee, Stafford, Pratt, Mitchell, Lincoln, Ellsworth and Rice counties. She may be reached by calling 620-786-6284.
