The Mind, Body and Spirit Program is a free program to all patients and
family members at Heartland Cancer Center.
Mind
Cancer affects not only your body, but also the mind and spirit as well.
These classes explore the connection between the mind, body and the immune
system. This program is designed to help you work through negative emotions
such as fear, anxiety, anger and depression. Positive attitudes, thoughts
and feelings can maximize the effectiveness of your immune system.

Body
Healing therapy is a sacred healing art implementing a method of using the
hands to direct energy to ease pain and promote relaxation in those who are
experiencing anxiety, tension or stress. Healing therapy is used to restore
harmony and balance, and to assist in health and wellness.
Specific Uses of Healing Therapy:
Relief of pain and increase relaxation
Reduce anxiety and stress
Restore energy
Help to reduce tension and increase wellness before and after medical
treatment.

Spirit
Spirituality is a natural gift of all people. It is the search for meaning
and purpose in life and explores the relationship with self, others, and
God. Thinking about the meaning of life defines how we think about our own
illness. This part of the program provides opportunities for discussions and
presentations to enhance our own resources for nurturing the spirit, while
coping with ones own illness, or that of a family member.

Prayer for someone about to undergo treatment
John Grummon is a board certified chaplain at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital
and a member of the Golden Belt Home Health and Hospice care team. He also
serves as an on-call chaplain for Heartland Cancer Center. John is an
ordained minister of the American Baptist Churches USA.
Sister Elizabeth
Amman, O.P. is certified in Spiritual Direction. She serves as a chaplain at
Central Kansas Medical Center and Heartland Cancer Center.
Sherri L.
Massey, M.S. is a licensed Clinical Marriage and Family Therapist including
clinical training from Harvard Medical School's Mind/Body Institute in
Behavioral Mind/Body Medicine. Sherri is a recent breast cancer survivor.
Jane Bemis is certified in Healing Therapy. She has been active as a hospice
volunteer since 1996, and is also a participant in the Kansas Life Project
and the local Caring Community Coalition.
